Retail Green Cerignola Olives

Item #: 353

These olives taken their name from Cerignola, a small town in Puglia. There are various theories about their origin. Some believe that they stem from the Roman "Orchites" olives, which Roman armies used to carry on their long journeys. Olive stones thrown down after a banquet in Puglia took root and led to the cultivation of Cerignola olives. Others think, these olives arrived from Spain in Puglia in 1500 - when Puglia was under the rule of the Spanish empire - and found their perfect habitat.

Hot, dry, breezy summers and cool winters of Puglia provide the perfect growing conditions, allowing the Bella di Cerignola Olives to grow to become the world's largest olive.
